Autumn Gardening and Second Plantings

Normally when autumn rolls around the planting season is over and the average gardener puts their garden to bed until the following spring where they restart their gardening work, but did you know that many plants and vegetables can be planted in the autumn months and will be ready to bloom and harvest when the spring following spring comes? Well, this is the truth and there are many plants and vegetables that can be planted in autumn for spring harvest and blooming.

Second plantings really refer to planting bulbs and seeds during the autumn to help you have an early harvest before the next spring and summer crop are even planted. These types of plants and vegetables should normally be planted towards the end of summer. Remember to look up your local planting schedule to see what plants are okay to plant where you live. Some vegetables and plants that are commonly planted during autumn are broccoli, turnips, lettuce, carrots, peas, radish, spinach, leeks, beets, radishes, collards, and more.

As you can see there are many plants and vegetables that can be planted during autumn, depending on where you live, and can yield great and delicious crops come the following spring. This is a great idea for anyone who wants to get a head start on their gardening season and try to make the most out of their later months, because normally people feel as though that once the summer is over that gardening is really over for the year but this is just not true and there are many options out there for people who want to continue gardening year round.

If you are considering doing some autumn gardening then you should probably do most of the planting in your current garden. What you will want to do is remove all of your seasonal vegetation that has already grown and add the extra roots and leftovers into your compost heap if you decided to start building one of those. Having a compost heap is a great way to make your own fantastic soil and not only that but it is a great way to recycle and as you probably know, the Earth needs as much recycling as it can get right now. While you are already maintain your current gardening bed in august it can also be a great opportunity to plant yourself some spring flower bulbs, these will harvest around the spring time and will produce many beautiful spring flowers for you.

Autumn gardening is a great way to get a head start on your gardening season and depending on where you live there are many great vegetable and flowers that can be planted and grown during the august season and will produce many great crops the following spring. You need to be sure that what you are planting will be able to survive during the autumn so be sure to check your local gardening schedule to ensure that all of your vegetables and flowers are able to grow in your climate.
